A reinforcer is something that is given after the behavior that results in an increase in the behavior.
For some students, it may be necessary to initially reinforce the behavior with some type of extrinsic reward, such as activities, tokens, social interaction, or tangible. During the FBA, the team can determine reinforcers that can be used to motivate the student to engage in the alternative replacement behavior and other appropriate behaviors. The reinforcement surveys on the right can help teams determine what could reinforce the student.
When using these rewards, we must have a plan to “fade out” the reward, meaning we need to gradually replace it with more naturally occurring rewards. Of course, fading can only occur effectively once the student has shown an increased ability to engage in the appropriate, desired behavior.
